A special edition of Solta a Franga, the weekly global beats radioshow at Concertzender(.nl). Dedecated to only one band: Baba Zula from Istanbul, Turkey. Since 1996, they combine traditional turkish instrumets like saz, spoons, baglama and darbuka with bass, electronics, psychedic dub effects and animal sounds. DJ Safri is a big fan for many years now, and once had the privilege to play before and after their gig in Amsterdam. For this megamix he choose some of his favorite album tracks and combined them with some special remixes and a live recording. This mix was broadcasted on Concertzender radio on March 11 2011. Starting Thursday 24 September, GlobaLoca! is back at the SJU club in Utrecht. GlobaLoca! is a monthly Global Dance Night, where bands and DJs take you on a rollercoaster trip around the world. Back at Rasa!

DJ Safri will be playing at Rasa again. This is big news; it’s three years ago since he last played at this well-known worldmusic stage in Utrecht. Safri actually started his career as Global Dance DJ at Rasa, way back in 2002. He initiated and became resident DJ on the monthly Mystic Grooves party’s at Rasa in 2003. These party’s with the best ‘CousCous Grooves & Basmati Breaks’ became hugely successful. Safri also played at Rasa alongside many live-acts and was resident on the first Balkan/gypsy clubnight in Holland. ...On thursday 15th of October, there is a Gypsy/Balkan night at Rasa with a live performance by Kočani Orkestar, a great brass band from Macedonia. ...DJ Safri is also featured in a new commercial campagne for Rasa. One Utrecht city bus is covered with an ad called “Rasa: the place to discover music!”. It can be spotted for one year all over the city!

The second ‘Solta a Franga’ mix by DJ Safri for Concertzender radiostation is called Bombay Massive. It is inspired by the movie Slumdog Millionaire, which got 8 Oscars including one for best music (by the famous Bollywood composer A.R. Rahman). Safri is a long-time Bollywood & A.R. Rahman fan, and he’s excited that there’s finally more recognition from the west. The high-octane mix features some of the tracks from the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack and more Bollywood, Bhangra and Asian Underground tracks. It was broadcasted Februari 27th. The dutch Concertzender radiostation started a new weekly show featuring global dance music. The show is called ‘Solta a Franga’ (a Brazillian expression for “Go Wild!”) and is broadcasted every Friday night from 00:00 - 01:00. DJ Safri is one of the DJs involved and will deliver a new mix every month. Other DJs involved are PolyEsta, Nohmada & Miss World. GlobaLoca! : New Global Dance night in Utrecht

Starting thursday 16th of October, there will be GlobaLoca!, a brand new monthly Global Dance night at the SJU Jazzpodium in Utrecht! Safri will be one of the resident DJ's, together with his good friends Trevo & Bertu. Every month the night will start at 21:00 with a live performance by a Local Global band. Afterwards, the DJ's will rule the dancefloor with a blend of hot Afrofunk, Gypsygrooves, Brazilectro, Oriëntvibes, Balkanbeats and more. Best of all: entrance is free! Sad news

Some very sad new: my friend, DJ collegue and promoter Paul Marijnissen a.k.a. DJ Laup has died last week, after a serious illness. I met Paul only a year ago, when he asked me to be resident DJ on his monthly Global Beats parties in Rotterdam. I enjoyed working with him, we shared the same passion and he inspired me. He will be missed a lot. I wish Modita, his family & friends all the strenght in this difficult time.

In Januari 2008, Safri is traveling thru India. He will start in the city of Delhi, then go to Rajasthan, the colorful desert state where gypsy, muslim & hindi traditions left their traces. He will end in Mumbai (Bombay). The monthly residency at Global Beats (Januari 6 at Waterfront, Rotterdam) will be taken over by DJ Trevo.

This week, the dutch magazine Nieuwe Revu published an article about balkan & gypsy music, written by Jaïr Tchong (aka DJ Jaïrzino). For their website, Nieuwe Revu asked DJ Safri to produce a podcast. Safri made a 24 minute mix featuring some of the artists mentioned in the article and some balkan artists living in Holland. New monthly party in Rotterdam with DJ Safri!

Daylight Dancing presents: GLOBAL BEATS November 4 will mark the first edition of a new monthly party featuring DJ Safri in Rotterdam, at the Waterfront. It's on a Sunday afternoon, starting at 14:00. This might sound unusal, but it's not an entirely new concept: Daylight Dancing is well known for doing daytime parties in Rotterdam for many years. In the past, it was focussed mainly on African dance music. But with DJ Safri as the new resident DJ, the horizon will be broadened: every month he will take you on a musical trip around the world: from Brasil to the Balkan, from Congo to Cuba, from Northern India to South Africa.... For 6 months in a row, Global Beats will take place on the first sunday of the month. Raromski - 'Tutti Frutti' remixed by DJ Safri

Balkan-Gypsy band Raromski has released its debut album 'On Air' in September 2007. It contains a slammin' club remix of the track 'Tutti Frutti' by DJ Safri! The track is a well known traditional Rroma song, which is also featured in the Tony Gatlif movie 'Gadjo Dilo'. The album, released on Syncoop Records, was presented on the DoeDans Festival in Biddinghuizen on September 1st. Safri was DJ-ing before and after the band.... DJ Safri works on 'TouchMeDare' project, debut on the 2007 Lowlands Festival

DJ Safri cooperated on the 'TouchMeDare' project, which was presented to an audience for the first time on the dutch LOWLANDS Festival 2007. TouchMeDare is a big (3,5x2,5 m) interactive touchscreen which enables people to produce their own musical compositions by touching each other thru the flexible screen. Several dutch DJ/producers and sounddesigners were asked to produce a collection of sound loops, as source material for the composition. DJ Safri produced a collection of 'global loops', combining Egyptian- & Cuban rhythms, Tibetan- & Indian voices, North African Oud, Spanish flamenco sounds and more.
